This abstract landscape painting is unusual because of the positioning on the canvas. The subject is a landscape, yet the canvas is placed portrait way up. The composition and subject can account for this. Although an abstract oil painting, forms that are loosely representative of mountains, trees, rocks and flowers appear across the surface of the artwork. For example, the gestural purple grey stroke that dominates the background looks like a rocky outcrop looming out of the mist. The expressive white and yellow ochre splashes of color, in the foreground to the left of the composition, roughly resemble flowers. The movement that the brushstrokes and the composition create together allows a great sense of emotion to flow through the artwork. The mountain at the right, in the background, seems to sway as if a downpour of rain were moving across its rocky slopes. This part of the painting also creates a sense of scale and proportion that can then be reapplied to the rest of the objects and marks in the painting, giving us some indication of size and distance.
