This prominent artistic movement placed great emphasis of the importance of individual expression, and the artists that worked in this way often went to great lengths to dedicate themselves to this idea. The palette knife work is loose and expressive in this example, and the paint has been quickly applied in a spirited fashion. This creates a gestural and free atmosphere, however, the composition is carefully organized into horizontal segments and the gradual change of color is deliberate and careful. The bright red is bold and exciting, and a prominent color throughout the canon of abstract expressionism.
