This expertly painted wall decor painting has been atmospherically rendered using the layering of deep earthen colors and a palette knife. The light has been captured as it falls on the impressionistic arrangement of flowers in the centre of the canvas. The study of light was the primary objective for the popular French Impressionist Artists, and many of them considered it to be, more than any subject matter, their medium. This oil painting is inspired by these same sentiments. As the light picks out the forms of the petals and flower heads, it also casts its shadows outwards towards the furthest corners of the composition. This creates a strong contrast of color, making the shadows darker and the light seem brighter; the qualities of one are reinforced by the differences and opposite nature of the other. A hazy, languid feeling of movement has been created because the composition has been titled out of the square shape of the canvas. Notice how the shadows cross the surface of the canvas diagonally.  This stops the flowers in the centre looking stationary and immoveable, and gives them lightness, as if they could drift out of the canvas itself and into the room that we occupy.
